Have you ever seen someone who has a perfectly clear looking complexion? I’m talking about someone who has youthful, healthy, glowing looking skin. They never seem to have any dry or flaky patches on their skin. And little to no fine lines or wrinkles. You most likely know someone like that. I know I do! In fact, I know lots of people like this.
You may be thinking that’s down to amazing gene’s. And sometimes it is. Or perhaps some amazing wonder cream they’ve been using. But most likely, it comes down to something else. A little habit that they do every single day. Or rather, something that they consume every single day.

It’s called H2O. Or as it’s better-known water!!! Okay, so technically water is not a skincare product. Or anti-ageing treatment. But it is the absolute basis of every healthy skincare routine!
You can buy the best, most expensive moisturisers, serums and face oils that are on the market. But, one thing is for sure. If you’re not drinking enough water, you’re never going to get the great results that you want! No matter how much or how often you’re using that fancy expensive skincare product.
I so often see clients and models who have beautiful, clear skin. Yet, they have dry patches on their face. This is not necessarily because they have dry skin. It’s because they have dehydrated skin. And it’s dehydrated because they don’t drink enough water.
The absolute best thing you can EVER do for your skin is to ensure that drinking water is part of your skincare routine every single day.
How does your skin work?
Let’s start with a few basic facts. Your body is made up of 70% water. And your skin is made up of 64% water. Even your brain is made up of 90% water!
Your skin is an organ. In fact, it’s the largest organ you have. Like all parts of the body, your skin is made up of cells. Skin cells are made up of water. Each organ needs water in order to function properly. So if you think about it, if your skin isn’t getting enough water, it’s not going to function at it’s best.
How will I notice this?
For starters, the effects of this are going to show in the form of dull, dehydrated, flaky looking skin.
Let’s use the example of a plant that hasn’t been watered. It begins to look withered, drooping and dry as it’s lacking water. But give it some water and it begins to flourish and grow and it looks healthy and glowing again. The skin behaves in the same way.
Our skin loses so much water on a daily basis. It’s lost through things like central heating, sweating whilst working out, the sun and various other environmental factors. So we need to constantly replace this water, in order to prevent dehydration. Other telltale signs of dehydrated skin are fine lines, larger-looking pores and, of course, wrinkles.

As we’ve already established, drinking plenty of water every single day is going to hydrate your skin. Hydrated skin looks healthy and glowing. When your skin is hydrated, it’s plump and elastic. In other words thicker. So this means that the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are diminished.
It kind of ‘fills in’ the pores and wrinkles if you like. Normally to get the best anti-ageing treatment available, you’d have to pay an absolute fortune. But water is so cheap. And depending on where you live, it can be free. Unlike some anti-ageing treatments, water doesn’t leave your skin looking red or take a few hours to recover from either!
Other awesome benefits of drinking water for your entire body
Not only does drinking plenty of water has visible effects on your skin, but it also has plenty of benefits for your entire body.
1. Feeling tired is one of the first signs of dehydration. Drinking water increases your energy and relieves fatigue. So if you’re feeling the afternoon slump, drink some water instead of going straight for caffeine. The effects of drinking water last much longer than drinking caffeine will. And they’re far better for your skin too. Caffeinated drinks won’t hydrate your skin. But water will. And it will help you to feel more energetic, as well as help you to concentrate better, leading to better productivity.
2. Water suppresses hunger by filling up your tummy, making you feel fuller. Sometimes you think we’re hungry, when in fact you’re actually dehydrated. So next time you feel like this, drink some water first. This can help to stop food cravings too, which can help with weight loss.
3. Water flushes out toxins and it maintains regularity. Okay, not the sexiest of things! But these are vital for a healthy body and healthy skin. Water even helps us to feel in a better mood. When you feel hydrated, you feel refreshed and full of energy which in turn leads to a better mood.
How much do I need to drink, I hear you ask?
Well, how about we start off small and say 1 litre of water per day. Now I know you might be thinking that’s a LOT of water. But it’s actually very easy to drink 1 litre of water per day.
How to easily get into a good routine
Like anything in life, once you’re in the habit of doing it, it’ll become second nature to you.
Buy yourself a 1-litre water bottle that you can reuse and fill with water every day. Or if you prefer, buy a 500ml water bottle. The smaller volume may seem more manageable, even if you are filling it up twice. Plus walking to the tap will burn a couple of calories too. Every little helps, right? 🙂
In order to be kind to the environment (and yourself), try to avoid plastic bottles. Always ensure it’s BPA free. And opt for one that’s reusable or recyclable. Examples are glass bottles or stainless steel.
Then keep it by your desk, in your handbag, wherever it’s close to you. Once it’s right beside you, it’s so easy to reach for it and drink some water.
Think of it like this. When there are some chocolates or sweets in the fridge, do you ever notice yourself reaching for them ‘just because they’re there’? Well, the same principle applies here. When the water is within reach of you, you’re going to drink it.

Instead of drinking a cup of coffee or black tea (which contains caffeine) first thing in the morning, drink a glass of water instead. Your skin needs hydration after you sleep, so a glass of water is not only going to perk up your skin, it’s going to perk you up too. But I don’t like the taste of water?
Okay, I get it. Water can taste a little bland. But there are so many ways to make it taste more interesting and very, very yummy. So if you don’t like the taste of water, or want to mix things up a little, I’ve got some awesome tips that you’re going to love.
How to make drinking water tastier & more fun
1. Add some water-rich fruits and vegetables to your bottle of water or glass of water. So for example, add some strawberries, cucumber or watermelon to water to not only give it a lovely taste but as all of these already have a very high water content (80-90%), you’re going to get an extra boost of hydration. So it’s a win-win.
2. Adding citrus fruits to water is also very tasty and very refreshing. I love to add orange, lemon and lime to water sometimes. You can either add them separately (eg: just orange, just lime, etc.) or combine all 3. Seriously yummy and amazing benefits for your skin and your body in general.
3. Or why not try some mint leaves in your water? This is so tasty. And mint is also great for aiding with digestion. You can literally be as creative as you like here. Throw in anything that you like the taste of.
Now drinking all of this water doesn’t mean you can skip using skincare products altogether. But as you’ve just read, drinking plenty of water is the first, and most important, step in any healthy skincare routine. Which is why it’s THE BEST anti-ageing treatment there is.
