The Correct Way To Apply Blusher

23. February 2018

Blusher appears to be the makeup product that a lot of you are most scared to try. This is most likely because you don’t know how to apply it. Or you fear that if you do, you’re going to look a clown! Here’s the great news! Blusher is nowhere near as scary or difficult to apply as you think. In fact, blusher is really easy to apply. And it literally only takes less than a minute to apply. Keep reading to find out how.

Applying blusher is much easier than you think. Once you've learnt the correct technique.

How to Apply Blusher

Regardless of whether you choose a powder blush or a cream blush, the following technique can be used to apply both types of blusher.

If not sure which type of blusher or shade of blusher is right for you, make sure to check out my guide on how to choose the best blusher shades and textures for your complexion.

How to Apply Powder Blush

Powder blush is best applied using a blusher brush.

I highly recommend using an angled blush brush to apply. As the brush is angled, it’s a great guide on where exactly to place the blush.

Begin by gently dipping your brush into the product to pick up some colour.

1️⃣ Now imagine there’s a line going from the top of your ear going down in the direction of your mouth. Using this as a guide, place the brush at the top of your ear and begin to gently dot the product onto your face at a downward angle.

2️⃣ Stop applying the product at the point of your cheek that lines up with the end of your eye. If you apply it any further than this, it will give an unnatural look.

3️⃣ Then begin to gently blend by using circular motions with your blusher brush. This will give you much more control over how much you apply and where you apply it.

4️⃣ Concentrate most of the colour at the top of your ear and it should be gradually lighter as you make your way down towards your cheeks.

Tip:

Make a ‘kiss face’ when applying your blusher. This will show you where your cheeks actually are and will act as a great guide as to where to apply the product.

The correct way to apply blusher is NOT to smile. As your face drops when you stop smiling. Meaning your blusher is not in the right position. Here's how you should apply blusher instead.

How to Apply Cream Blush

Cream blush is even easier to apply than powder blush as you can literally use your fingertips to apply it.

1️⃣ Using the same principle as step 2 above, make a kiss face first to see where your cheeks are.

2️⃣ Starting at the top of your ear, use your fingertips to apply the cream blush to your face. Remember, less is more. So start off with just a small amount of product first and build it up slowly.

3️⃣ Now begin to blend the blush using your fingertips. Apply a little more if you feel you need it.

Further Tips to ensure a beautiful, soft blusher application

1. Less is most definitely more!

Start off with a small amount of product and gradually layer it on bit by bit.

This way, you have so much more control over how much product you apply. And this will also avoid the ‘clown look’.

2. If you do apply a little too much, it’s easily fixed.

There are 2 really quick and easy ways to correct if you’ve applied a little too much blusher.

Method #1: for powder blusher

Using a soft, large, fluffy makeup brush gently go over the blush in circular motions to soften and blend it even further. Keep doing this until you’re happy with how it looks.

Method #1: for cream blusher

Grab your foundation brush that you’ve just used to apply your liquid or cream foundation. Then gently go over the blush in a circular motion.

This will soften the look of your blusher and will also help soften any harsh and unblended lines.

3. Dab a little on your hand

If you’re worried you’ve got too much product on your brush, dab it on your hand first a couple of times. This will ensure you don’t have too much blush on your brush.

Then apply what’s left on your brush to your cheeks. If you need some more product, go back to your hand and dip your brush into the excess blush you dabbed onto it a moment ago.

This may seem like it takes longer, but it’s actually a lot quicker to apply it this way.

It will ensure you don’t have too much product on your face which will mean less blending.

4. Avoid shimmer

Try to avoid blushers with a lot of shimmer in them. They’ll just give a very unnatural look to the skin.

Instead, opt for matte blushers or those that have a very small amount of sheen as these are a lot more flattering.

And keep the shimmer products for highlighting.

5. Don’t smile when applying blusher!

Why? Well, think of it like this.

When you smile, your cheeks rise upwards. But once you stop smiling, your cheeks fall down again.

So if you apply blusher to your cheeks when you’re smiling, what happens once you stop smiling? Your cheeks fall downwards again. And you end up with blush in the middle of your face!

Now I will say, the technique you use to apply your blusher will depend on the shape of your face.

However, this technique will work for most people. And it’s a great one to use if you’re a makeup beginner.

6. Don’t give up!

Like anything, practice makes perfect. If you don’t get this right the first few times, that’s okay. You’ll get better at it.

Even if you do apply a little too much, don’t worry. Just follow my advice from tip #1 above.

And if all else fails, you can always take it off. After all, it’s only makeup.

If you’re in need of a little more help, make sure to take a look at my video tutorial on how to apply blusher.
