7 Daytime Friendly Ways To Wear Colourful Eyeshadow

3. August 2018

Do you love to wear eyeshadow, but tend to stick to neutral shades? Perhaps you’d love to get a bit more adventurous and try some beautiful colourful eyeshadow shades. But you’ve no idea how to wear them! Or maybe you already own some gorgeous eyeshadow shades but they’re just sitting in your makeup bag and never get used. Wearing colourful eyeshadow shades isn’t actually as scary as it can seem at first. And they’re totally wearable for daytime too. When you know how of course! In this post, I’m going to show you 7 ways you can wear colourful eyeshadow in a subtle way. These tips are perfect for everyday wear and will really enhance your eyes beautifully.

If you're bored of wearing browns and neutrals, here are 7 ways to wear colourful eyeshadow shades that are very wearable and daytime friendly.

So why wear colourful eye makeup in the first place?

Wearing beautiful colours on your eyes is really going to enhance your eye colour. This, in turn, will actually enhance your entire complexion.

You may have already heard that wearing an eyeshadow in a shade that’s complementary to your eye colour will really brighten and enhance your eyes.

But this seems a little scary at first. As sometimes that complimentary colour could be blue or green or some other really bright looking shade.

However, it is possible to wear bright, colourful eyeshadow colours, WITHOUT looking like you’re going to an 80’s theme party!

The key is to keep everything else subtle. So if you’re someone who loves wearing neutral shades, you can still do that, and then just add a hint of colour to your makeup routine.

Let’s get started with the 7 ways you can wear colourful eye makeup every day.

1. Wear colourful eyeshadow as an eyeliner

A lovely, subtle way to introduce some colour into your routine is to wear a coloured eyeshadow as an eyeliner.

This is a great alternative to wearing black or brown eyeliner. Try shades like the ones I’ve suggested below. These will ease you into wearing colourful eye makeup, as these shades are not too bright.

How to do this:

Apply a neutral eyeshadow shade all over your eyelid. Then apply your coloured shade as your eyeliner. This will give a gorgeous little pop of colour and will enhance your eyes in a beautiful way.

For a soft smokey daytime look, apply a colourful eyeshadow dry along your lash line using a fine eyeliner brush.

Colourful eyeshadow shades are great to use an eyeliner. And a really great alternative to using a black or brown shade. They'll give a beautiful pop of colour.

If you want a more defined look, apply the eyeshadow wet. Or you could apply a colourful gel or liquid eyeliner.

2. Apply to the lower lashline

This is one of my favourites and I often wear coloured eyeshadow in this way myself.

Again, keep everything else fairly neutral. So apply your neutral shadows all over your lid and in your crease. Then apply the coloured eyeshadow shade on your lower lash line using a fine eyeliner brush.

Or if you’d like the line to be a little thicker and to get a bit more intensity, you could use a pointed dome-shaped brush instead. Apply the eyeshadow dry, as this will give a much more subtle finish.

This would be a perfect way to wear coloured eyeshadow to the office or your place of work. The look is still subtle and not at all brash. Yet it will really enhance your eye colour.

3. Apply on the outer corners of the eye

With this technique, again make sure to keep everything else minimalistic.

First apply a neutral shade in the crease and just a little above. This will provide a great basis for applying your coloured eyeshadow shade.

Next, apply a small amount of your coloured shade on the outer corners of your eye. Apply a little in the crease too. Build up the colour slowly until you achieve the intensity that you want. This part is key!

Then apply a lighter eyeshadow shade all over the eyelid.

With this method, you’re applying a little more of the colourful eyeshadow without it looking too much either. I’ve given you a few sample shades below.

Apply a colourful eyeshadow to your outer crease and pair with neutral shades for an elegant look with a pop of colour

Optional:

Add some eyeliner by applying a black or dark brown shade on your lashline.

Some additional tips:

Tip 1: If you feel you’ve applied too much of the shade. Or if you think it looks too intense, blend it out with a soft and fluffy eyeshadow blending brush.

Tip 2: Or you could apply a little more of your neutral transition shade. Then blend together with the coloured eyeshadow shade. This will help tone it down a little.

4. Apply a small amount in the inner corner of your eyes

This one can be a little more daring, but really nice depending on the colour you choose.

If you’re going to try this technique, stick to light to medium shades, such as pastel shades for example. This will keep the look more daytime friendly.

If you’re feeling a bit more daring, try shades such as teal, or even brighter shades such a yellow or orange shade.

5. Apply colourful eye makeup to the centre of the eyelid only

This is another great one if you’ve got a pastel or brighter shade of eyeshadow. If your eyeshadow has some shimmer to it, even better.

Applying a little of the shimmery shade in the middle of the eyelid can give your eyes a real wow effect.

Start by applying a lighter eyeshadow shade on the outer and inner areas of the eyelid, leaving the middle of the eyelid free.

Then place your coloured eyeshadow in the middle part of your eyelid. So where you left the gap. Now blend the edges slightly so that the 2 colours blend together.

6. Apply a colourful eyeliner pencil in the waterline

This is probably one of the easiest ways to wear colourful eye makeup. And a great way to introduce a little bit of colour into your makeup routine.

You can once again work with neutral eyeshadows if you like. Then just add a pop of colour on the lower waterline of the eye using an eyeliner pencil in a bright shade. That’s it. Super easy, perfect for daytime wear, and your eye colour will really pop so much.

7. Go all out and wear all over your eyelids

I absolutely love to wear colourful eyeshadows. So this is definitely one of my favourites.

However, even when I wear a colourful eyeshadow all over my eyelids, I still make sure to tone it down by applying a neutral shade in the crease.

So if you’re feeling a bit more daring by this stage, why not give this option a try. And depending on the shade, it can still be very daytime friendly.

Now it’s over to you

And I have a little challenge for you. I want you to dig out all the coloured eyeshadows and eyeliners that have been just sitting in your makeup bag for a while.

Now I want you to challenge you to go and experiment using one of the 7 techniques I gave you above.

Let me know in the comments which one you’re going to try first. Feel free to send me a photo if you like too. I’d absolutely LOVE to see what shade and what technique you tried.

And once you’ve mastered one of the techniques, maybe try one of the others.

But I’m not sure which eyeshadows shades are best for my eye colour?

This bit can a bit tricky alright. And it can definitely make or break your look.

But once you know what shades are the best ones to compliment and enhance your beautiful eye colour, you’ll feel so much more confident at giving one (or all!) of these techniques a try.

So if you’re in need of some help that’s specific to you, I’d absolutely love to help you. I’ll also help you choose which is the best technique to enhance your eye shape. As well as how to do it on your eyes. You can find out how here.

I hope this post has helped you to realise that colourful eyeshadows and eyeliners are not so scary at all. In fact, they’re really fun to wear and really enhance the colour of your eyes.

Spring and Summer are definitely great times of year to try them out and experiment a little. So why not give them a try. xo
