Essential oils can do wonders for your skin. Not to mention how absolutely divine they smell! But they’re also so versatile and can actually help to ease many types of Summer skin ailments such as hayfever, insect bites, and so much more. I asked expert aromatherapist, Julie Leonard, to share some of her favourite essential oils for Summer with us. She also explains what they can be used for and how we can incorporate them into our skincare routine. These tips are AMAZING! So let’s dive straight into Julie’s 9 essential oil remedies for summer.
ESSENTIAL OIL REMEDIES FOR SUMMER SKIN AILMENTS & HOW TO USE THEM
Just as I like to change my wardrobe as the weather gets warmer, I like to change my essential oils too. As the sun comes out I enjoy lighter, fresher aromas. However, its not just about creating a nice ambience. These wonderful little oils can help with a variety of summer issues too.
I’m now going to share with you some of the best essential oil remedies for Summer. I’ll also explain how best to use each one. And how you can even use them in your everyday beauty routine too.
#1: As a hayfever relief
If you’re a hayfever sufferer like me, then Eucalyptus oil is an amazing essential oil to relieve the symptoms. I use it in my Hayfever Balm which I just couldn’t be without.
It’s one of my favourite essential oil remedies for Summer. As it’s simple yet effective against sneezing, sinusitis, and headaches.
Something else you can do to ease the symptoms is mix in a couple of drops of sweet almond oil. Then rub it under your nose and over your sinuses.
#2: As an insect repellent
As soon as the sun comes out, so do those pesky bugs! Citronella is a cheap and effective insect repellent. Simply add some to an oil burner to keep those insects away.
Lemon Eucalyptus has also been proven to be effective too. It’s also been recommended by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a natural bio-pesticide repellent.
#3: Use on insect bites
If you get bitten or stung by any of those pesky insects, apply Lavender or Tea Tree oil to reduce pain, swelling and redness.
#4: To soothe sunburned skin
It’s easy to get too much sun sometimes. But Lavender and Chamomile essential oils will soothe any hot skin or sunburn.
Add a few drops of both to some fragrance-free lotion (15 drops in total to 50mls lotion) and apply. It instantly calms the skin. Plus it smells beautiful too.
#5: To ease stress
There’s no doubt the sun gives us more energy and we feel happier. But the summer holidays can also be stressful. Especially if you have little ones to entertain for many weeks without any childcare.
One of my favourite essential oil remedies for Summer time stress is Lavender oil. It’s a beautiful and inexpensive oil that will really help to relax you.
Frankincense is another great oil too to aid relaxation and calm the mind. Combine it with some Sweet Orange for a lovely relaxing blend.
#6: To relax you when flying
Jetting off on holiday is an exciting adventure. But for many, the fear of flying causes great anxiety. A couple of drops of Frankincense oil on a tissue that you can inhale will calm your mind and soothe your stress.
#7: To stay cool
I come from Scotland. So my skin and I aren’t used to hot summer temperatures!
One of my favourite essential oil remedies for Summer is peppermint essential oil. As it’s wonderfully cooling on hot summer days. Simply mix a few drops in some distilled water. Then put into a spray bottle and mist over your face and body.
Something to note is that oil and water don’t stay mixed. So always shake before each use.
#8: Use as a Summer scent
In Summer I like the lighter aromas of floral and citrus oils such as Bergamot, Lavender, Sweet Orange, Lime, Lemon, Lemongrass, Neroli and Mandarin. These are beautiful oils and smell so fresh. And they’re great to use as Summer scents.
Just add a few drops to an oil burner for a light, fresh and uplifting fragrance.
#9: To hydrate dry hair & lips
I love being out in the sun. But it can take its toll on our hair and lips. And if you live in an area that has hard water, it can leave your skin and hair quite dry and thirsty.
Anyone who knows me knows I love Lavender essential oil. Basically, you can use it for anything! And it smells amazing too!
I combine a few drops with some raw organic coconut oil. Then I put it in the ends of my hair overnight for a deep condition. I also make my own natural moisturising lavender lip balm too.
Some final tips from Julie
Essential oils for beginners
If you’re just starting out with essential oils, my top 3 essential oils for Summer skin are Lavender, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus.
I always carry a little travel set of these with me. With those 3, you can treat anything that comes up and they’re inexpensive and easy to find.
Essential oil safety
Avoid putting citrus essential oils on your skin before sunbathing. They can often react in the sun and cause skin sensitivities.
I hope these essential oil remedies for Summer skin ailments were helpful for you. And I hope you have a very happy Summer. Julie xo
