Wearing makeup on a long-haul flight isn’t really the best thing for your skin! The air on aeroplanes tends to dehydrate your skin very quickly. And the type of makeup you’re wearing can exacerbate that even further. However, this doesn’t mean you have to go completely bare-faced altogether. These in-flight makeup tips will minimise the dehydrating effects on your skin. And you’ll look glowing and gorgeous when you arrive at your destination. No matter how long you’ve been travelling for.
TIP #1: USE LIGHTWEIGHT FACE MAKEUP PRODUCTS
My number 1 in-flight makeup tip is to ensure you’re using lightweight products when travelling. And make sure they’re great quality face makeup products that only contain nourishing ingredients.
Because if they’re not, these are the products that’ll dehydrate your skin the most. And will leave your skin looking dry, dull and could possibly even cause some breakouts too.
Opt for either a lightweight foundation or a BB cream instead. They’ll still give you some coverage and will even out your skin tone in a gorgeous, natural looking way.
Plus they’re not too heavy on the skin.
Only apply concealer
Another option is to skip foundation altogether and just apply a little concealer wherever you need it.
This is generally around the eye area or anywhere you have any redness.
Applying a little concealer only on these areas of your face will be more than enough to brighten up any dark eye circles. Or to neutralise any redness, for example, around the nose area or across the cheeks.
TIP #2: USE CREAM PRODUCTS INSTEAD OF POWDER
Powder products can dry out your skin even further. So another of my top in-flight makeup tips for you is to swap your powder products for cream products.
For example, swap your powder blusher for a cream one instead.
Cream blushers give a gorgeous, dewy finish to the skin. And they’re super simple to apply! Here’s a tutorial for you on how to apply cream blusher.
Even better, many cream blushers are multi-use and can be used as a cream eyeshadow and lip product too.
Another benefit of using cream products is you don’t even need to bring makeup brushes with you. As you can literally apply them with your fingers.
So that’s one less thing to have to pack!
TIP #3: AVOID WATERPROOF MASCARA
I know it’s tempting to reach straight for the waterproof mascara. But mainstream waterproof mascara’s contain very harsh ingredients.
These ingredients dry out your eyelashes and can lead to damage and fallout. Not to mention they can irritate your eyes by making them sore and itchy!
Opt instead for a natural mascara that will hydrate and nourish your eyelashes.
If you need some inspiration, here are my all-time favourite natural, organic and cruelty-free mascaras. These are my go-to mascaras for everyday use as well as when I’m travelling.
They always perform extremely well and have never let me down.
Plus they make my eyelashes look longer and fuller. As well as nourishing them and keeping them healthy as they only contain beautiful, nourishing ingredients.
TIP #4: USE A TINTED LIP BALM
Your lips are one of the areas that tend to suffer most when flying. This is because the skin on the lips is so thin.
So the next of my top in-flight makeup tips is to apply a tinted lip balm.
Not only do they contain super nourishing ingredients that will keep your lips hydrated. They also add a subtle yet gorgeous hint of colour to your lips that will brighten up your complexion in an instant.
They’re also perfect for the beach or whilst walking about in the city to protect your lips as well as add a little colour for a gorgeous, natural look.
ALWAYS avoid lip balms that contain the ingredient petrolatum (or petroleum).
This ingredient does absolutely nothing to hydrate your lips. In fact, it does the opposite! As it literally just sits on top of the lips and never actually penetrates the skin to adequately hydrate it.
Here are some further tips to help you stay fresh and fabulous no matter how long your journey is.
KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED
A good makeup routine is only as good as a great skincare routine. So make sure to read my top in-flight skincare tips.
They’ll give your skin the base it really needs to ensure it looks and feels fresh and hydrated whilst travelling.
PACK A TOOTHBRUSH & TOOTHPASTE
Brushing your teeth midway or towards the end of your journey is a really great way to feel refreshed in an instant.
Just make sure your toothpaste is packaged in a container that’s 100ml or under in size so as to stay within the airline guidelines for bringing liquids onboard.
BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES
This is another super quick and simple way to feel refreshed in an instant.
You don’t have to bring a full outfit if you don’t want to. Even just changing your top and underwear will make you feel more refreshed.
PACK A HAND SANITISER
These are really handy for travelling as they’ll help keep your hands fresh and clean.
They’re also perfect for when you’re out and about on your travels when the toilet facilities are less than ideal!
But a quick spray of your hand sanitiser and your hands will be free from germs and clean in an instant.
KEEP THINGS MINIMAL
Restrictions on how much liquids you can bring onboard make this a must.
But not only that, it also makes sense to make everything as compact as possible when travelling as it lightens your load. You don’t want to be lugging a whole load of products around with you whilst travelling!
Using multi-use products is a great way to do this. For example, like the cream blushers I mentioned above that can be used as a blusher, cream eyeshadow and a lip product. That’s 3 products all in 1 small container.
You can also do the same for your skincare. And I talked about my favourite multi-use skincare product in this article with my top in-flight skincare tips. So make sure to check it out. This 1 product does 8 things. That’s what I call a real multi-tasker!
Now I’d love to hear from you. Do you usually wear makeup when travelling? Which of these in-flight makeup tips do you think you’ll implement first? Or do you perhaps have any of your own in-flight makeup tips that I didn’t mention above? Share them in the comments below as I’d love to hear them. xo
