Going on holidays and travelling are just so much fun. Getting to explore new places and experience new cultures and languages is such an amazing feeling. And travel really does broaden the mind. But travelling, and in particular, flying can also take its toll on your skin. Sitting for hours on aeroplanes can dehydrate your skin. And travelling for long periods of time or throughout the night disrupt your usual skincare routine which can cause havoc with your skin. But there are a few really simple things you can to do to lessen the effects. And even doing just 1 or 2 of these in-flight skincare tips will make such a positive difference and ensure your skin stays fresh, hydrated and glowing no matter how long you’re travelling for.
TIP #1: DRINK LOTS OF WATER
If you only implement just 1 of these in-flight skincare tips, please do your skin a favour and implement this one! It’s an absolute essential to ensure your skin is as hydrated as possible.
I know it can be tempting to drink the carbonated drinks you’re being offered by the air stewards. Or even to drink a glass of vino (or 6!). After all, you’re on holidays. So it’s time to let loose a little!
Whilst I totally agree with that (I know you’ve worked hard to be able to go on this trip!), drinking alcohol or fizzy drinks whilst flying will only dehydrate your skin even more.
So save the vino, cocktails and any other alcoholic beverages until you’ve arrived at your destination. And stick to drinking as much water as you can whilst on your flight.
Your skin will really thank you for it.
Herbal teas are also okay.
This also applies to any other form of transport
Yes, the air on aeroplanes will dehydrate your skin more quickly.
But travelling long distances on trains and buses can also play havoc with your skin. So drink as much water as you can no matter how you’re travelling.

TIP #2: SPRITZ YOUR SKIN WITH A HYDRATING SPRAY
These are really great for on the go. And they’ll perk up your skin in an instant.
I suggest using a hydrating facial spray throughout the flight as a quick & easy way to hydrate your skin. And again before landing.
This is why it’s one of my favourite in-flight skincare tips as it’s so simple and quick and makes your skin look and feel so fresh.
Even if you have oily skin, you still need to keep your skin hydrated.
So I still suggest a hydrating spray for your skin type too. You can read all my Summer skincare tips for oily skin here.
My favourite hydrating spray for all skin types (including oily skin) is the Daily Defence Moisture Mist by Evolve Beauty.
It comes in a 100ml size which fits perfectly within the requirements for bringing liquids onboard. But it also comes in a handy 30ml size too which is also perfect for travelling.
TIP #3: REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP
Wearing makeup on long flights can dehydrate your skin.
But no matter if you’re travelling on a long flight, bus or train journey, another in-flight skincare tip I highly recommend is to remove your makeup.
At the very least, remove it just after you arrive at your destination to freshen up your skin as soon as possible.
You’ll most likely have been travelling for a while. And your makeup has probably been on your skin since the day before.
Once you remove your makeup and cleanse your skin, make sure to follow up with a hydrating face moisturiser.
If you still want to wear makeup on the flight, follow the above method. Then wait for a minimum of 5 minutes to really allow the moisturiser to soak into your skin. And then go ahead and apply a fresh layer of makeup.
But make sure to also read my in-flight makeup tips. These tips will help minimise the dehydrating effects and will keep your skin looking fresh and fabulous even if you do want to wear makeup.
TIP #4: TRY TO STICK TO YOUR NORMAL ROUTINE
This can be a little trickier. But definitely doable. If you’re travelling overnight, try to get some sleep. As this is normally what you’d be doing at that time anyway.
You most likely won’t have the most quality sleep you’ve ever had. But something is better than nothing.
After all, it’s when you sleep that your skin repairs itself. It needs sleep in order to be able to do this.
If you have trouble sleeping whilst travelling, put an eye mask over your eyes. Then pop on your headphones or earbuds and listen to some relaxing music.
Or listening to a podcast will work too. This is what I love to do and it really helps me to drift off to sleep.
TIP #5: APPLY A HYDRATING FACE MASK
Another of my top in-flight skincare tips is to apply a hydrating face mask.
Make sure it’s a leave on one as it’s hassle-free.
I’m a big fan of the Pai Skincare Rosehip Bioregenerate Rapid Radiance Mask. I love how hydrated and glowing my skin looks and feels after using it. It’s technically not a leave-on face mask.
However, it has a lovely creamy texture that looks and feels like a moisturiser. So nobody will even notice you’ve applied a face mask.
Leave it on for 8-10 minutes. Then just quickly nip to the bathroom and remove it with a cloth and some water which only takes a few seconds.
If you can’t apply the mask on the flight, make sure to apply a hydrating mask once you reach your destination. And always follow up with a face moisturiser too.
Tip #6: USE A HYDRATING LIP BALM
The lips are one area that’s worst affected by the dry air when flying. So make sure to keep a good hydrating lip balm with you and apply regularly throughout your journey.
BUT AVOID THIS INGREDIENT AT ALL COSTS!
Please oh please avoid lip balms that contain the ingredient petrolatum! It’s also known as petroleum jelly.
It does absolutely nothing to hydrate your skin! Let alone the negative impact it has on own beautiful planet.
You’ll find this ingredient in many of mainstream brand lip balms, such as Vaseline.
Instead, opt for one that contains nourishing natural and or organic ingredients that are actually going to hydrate and care for your lips.
I’m a huge fan of this gorgeous Peppermint Lip Balm that’s made with 100% natural ingredients.
Or if you like a bit of colour on your lips, try a tinted lip balm. I’m currently loving these 100% natural tinted lip balms by Weleda. They come in 3 gorgeous shades and give a lovely hint of colour to my lips. Which is also perfect for the beach. And they really hydrate my lips as they contain only natural, nourishing ingredients.
MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE & MUST HAVE PRODUCT FOR TRAVELLING
If you only want to bring just 1 product with you, then it has to be the AMAZING Skin Food by Weleda. It’s the perfect product to bring when travelling. Because it’s such a multi-tasker.
It can be used as a face mask, a face moisturiser, a hand cream and a lip balm. In fact, you can pretty much use on it on any part of your body. It can be even be applied to the ends of dry frizzy hair.
